Python 3.5.2

Postby PaulinePython » Thu Sep 15, 2016 1:04 am

Hi,
I am learning Python and need some help.
I have downloaded Python 3.5.2 and installed. After installing, I updated (get update) IDLE and got 2.7.11. Is there a way to upgrade it to Python 3.5.2?

Thanks in advance,
Pauline.

Normally, Python installs a version of IDLE with that version of Python. That said, do you also have a version 2.7.11 of Python installed on your computer? Did you install any 'prepackaged' Python that might have installed Python 2.7.11?

From a command terminal, if you type in 'python' (w/o quotes) do you get a display similar to:
Code: Select all
Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.10586]
(c) 2015 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\>python
Python 3.5.2 (v3.5.2:4def2a2901a5, Jun 25 2016, 22:18:55) [MSC v.1900 64 bit (AMD64)] on win32
Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.
>>>

You can also navigate to the directory where Python is installed and try running idle directly (your directory may be different):
Code: Select all
C:\>cd c:\Python 3.5\Lib\idlelib
c:\Python 3.5\Lib\idlelib>python idle.pyw

Hope that helps, if not let us know

Thanks Sparkz.

I did my install on Linux. I found it in directory "~/Downloads/Python-3.5.2/Lib/idlelib".
After "python idle.pyw", it opened up "Python 2.7.11+ Shell".

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.
Pauline.

I did my install on Linux

Which distro? Linux comes with python2.x by default as linux uses it. However lately some linux distros have come with python3.x too. You can test this out by typing on the terminal
Code: Select all
python3

If that runs ...and assuming you didnt change any config files, you can just go ahead and delete your download as you already have python3.x

After installing, I updated (get update) IDLE and got 2.7.11.

Dont change your python 2.7.11. If that is the default you can mess things up.

Python installs a version of IDLE with that version of Python

This is true to windows. But on linux IDLE may be a separate package. Especially on advanced distros such as Arch Linux.
