Make repositories mandatory for Completed Scripts

Make repositories mandatory for Completed Scripts

Postby Mekire » Thu Jul 17, 2014 6:30 am

Pretty self explanatory. I have seen quite a few people providing links to zips and msi files lately. I really think there isn't much excuse for not using a repository these days if you are trying to share an open source project.

No need to mandate where the repo be hosted (github; bitbucket, even google code) , but it should be browsable without downloading anything.

What do people think about this? We would probably need to add an additional sticky in the Completed Scripts section.

I'm afraid that would be off-putting to newbies on-arrival. I think a polite "more people will read your code if you do X" would suffice.

Yeah, put the suggestion in NURT (New Users Read This) like micseydel says.
Proverbs 26:14 describes me a bit too well.

Maybe not in NURT, but maybe in a sticky in the Completed Scripts section. We could also explain there about binaries and such, and maybe ask that people include whether or not they're looking for feedback or just want to share.

If it is a short script, I think it's fine to put the whole script in code-tags without using a repository.
The only downside is that a new post is required whenever the script changes.
