Newbie help with using print?

Postby poweroverwhelming » Tue Apr 23, 2013 12:58 am

Hello. I have been wanting to get into coding for awhile, and I chose python, in hopes of learning how to code game scripts and such.
I tried downloading a couple of the latest versions, but when I try to type:
print ["hello world"]
I get an error message. It just won't seem to work. So I uninstalled everything and I came here. I'm giving you guys my system info so maybe someone could step up and tell me what to install. Just tell me if I need to let you know any more information. I have absolutely no prior experience with programming.

OS name: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium
System Type: x64-based pc
Processor: AMD Anthlon(tm) II X4 630 processor

Please help! I would really appreciate someone telling me what to install.

Code: Select all
print ["hello world"]

this is not legit code, which is why you got an error message

however:
Code: Select all
print("hello world")

this is

I'm putting on the dunce cap now...
I was raging over not being able to type a simple code, and it turned out I mixed up brackets and parenthesis. I'm going to reinstall and try the code you gave me.

Before I install, I just need to confirm something. I download: "Python 3.3.1 Windows x86 MSI Installer" from the python download page, right?

whichever python version you choose is up to you. People still use 2.x and people use 3.x. And the x86 is regarding 32 bit. So if your OS is 32 bit then yeah, and if your OS is 64 bit then download the x64 bit one.

Thanks for the help. I figured out which python version to use before you replied (3.3.1), and now I'm picking up the basics quite well. As I code and improve, I'm going to be staying on this forum seeing what the community is sharing and discussing. I guess you can delete this thread now. It's pointless and really has no purpose besides taking up space.

It does server a purpose. Others with the same question will google search and find this thread, and maybe it will answer their question without them even posting. So it not only helps you.

true that. this is why it is very annoying when people delete their own posts after the question got answered.. this is the internet, help someone you dont know!
