What are your thoughts on Ruby?

What are your thoughts on Ruby?

Postby XndrK » Sat Jun 14, 2014 12:33 am

I am considering learning Ruby as well as Python. What do you think about the language? In what ways would it be more productive than Python?

Thanks.
Proverbs 26:14 describes me a bit too well.

I don't know anything about Ruby. Haven't gotten to that language yet. If you know Python, you could go to a Ruby forum and ask the same question, and compare and contrast their ideas with what you know. Google search "language1 VS language2", however just be aware of the writers bias opinions towards either language.

Python and Ruby seem very similar. This is part of the reason holy wars erupt between the groups so easily. Ruby on Rails has been a skill in demand for a while, but then, so is Django. For the most part I would say that Python and Ruby accomplish essentially the same things, and to a degree have the same advantages and disadvantages. You will probably learn it fairly easily if you are comfortable with Python. I only looked into it glancingly but it seemed it would be pretty easy to pick up.

I don't remember ever reading or writing any Ruby code at all. What comes to mind is it's use on Web Development with RoR and also seems like a great tool for pentesters considering that Metasploit is written in Ruby.

I just started Ruby so I can't say much but I find the optional parenthesis to be headache inducing, like everything else so far though.

I don't know anything about the actual code, but the idea of inventing a language to be fun seems strange to me. If it's a good language, it will be fun. If it's fun, it will not necessarily be a good language.
