PythonForum on GitHub: project1: We have a topic!

Postby XndrK » Wed Jun 18, 2014 10:14 pm

stranac, Ephexeve, pydsigner and I have decided that project1 is going to be a Web-based Linux "remote control" (open and close applications, run scripts, manage processes, etc.) called Clicker, so if somebody with Owner privileges would rename it, I would be happy.

Now I need to get a Linux box.

:sigh:

How is this project different from ssh, teamviewer, jrdesktop, RDP, VNC etc?

There was a complaint about the OP being removed here. Mods and admins don't have access to any history, so we can't put it back, but I'd appreciate if you did, and never deleted an OP again. Especially not without explanation, when there's an answer, and it just looks terrible.

I went into a panic about the legality of the whole thing, so I deleted it.

Now I can't remember what I wrote, and I still have doubts. I do remember asking about renaming the repo, but beyond that, I don't know.

Of course, this is NOT going to be a black-hat hacking tool (or even a white-hat hacking tool), but what if a real black-hat finds out (through evil means) that somebody has this installed, and somehow uses it to take over the computer?

We are going to need a lot more people than we currently have if this is going to succeed without security (and especially legal) concerns.

As Somelauw mentioned, this is similar to SSH, so I wouldn't be concerned with legality on that front. You just have to declare "as is" and all. If you're really concerned about it, just prompt the user every five minutes to annoy them enough to not use it, then remove that garbage later.

Of course, we should (as courtesy) put a copy of the MIT license in the installation, because if we don't, it will be clickwrap, and I hate clickwrap.

Well you (the group) can use any license you want. You could release it as-is to open domain or use a more copy-left or GNU-style rather than MIT. I happen to like MIT, but I don't think it's special in avoiding clickwrap.

Did this project die?

I'd like to participate in a forum-driven project.

PS: Sorry for the necro.
