Eclipse settings help with creating pydev project

Postby sc25893 » Sat May 18, 2013 3:04 pm

Hi everyone,

I have been learning C++ for the past 6 months or so and wanted to give python a whirl. So I'm on a mac, eclipse installed with PyDev, running python v2.7.

I'm confused about the terminology in the popup when I select File > New PyDev Project. I have the options to:

1) Add project directory to the PYTHONPATH
2) Create 'src' folder and add it to the PYTHONPATH
3) Don't configure PYTHONPATH (to be done manually later on)

I created a project called 'Practice' and selected option 2 above so the resulting structure is (for me):

/Programming/Python/Workspace/Practice/src/main.py.

I am literally at day 3 or 4 so I am still just mucking around. This setup is ok because I can quickly test different things. I have been looking at:

http://docs.python-guide.org/en/latest/ ... cture.html

I am just unsure about what those settings 1-3 mean. I read another post somewhere that says 'src' folder is bad. So if I choose option 1, how do I then structure my program? I will end up with:

/Programming/Python/Workspace/Practice/main.py.

Thanks for any input. Sorry for the huge post, tried to give as much info as possible.

i wouldn't concern yourself too much about what the other settings do at this stage in your learning, you can spend ages going off in a tangent to find out why not to use something and then not get much code written(i do it all the time lol), but using the src folder is the right way to go.
This is from pydev manual http://pydev.org/manual_101_project_conf2.html
The first thing to know about PyDev is that to use it to its 'full extent', you must have your python modules beneath a source folder (the source folders are the paths that are added to your PYTHONPATH).
